Welcome to 10-for-30! Our VeganMoFo 2014 Adventure!

As we shared with you yesterday, we’re pumped for this year’s VeganMoFo (Vegan Month of Food), which starts TODAY, SEPTEMBER 1st! With that, allow us to formally introduce our theme entitled “10-for-30: A Month of Top 10 Lists”

Everyday, this month, we’ll be sharing a new Top 10 list all about vegan living from food to fun stuff! So, let’s get things started with our first Top 10 list!

Top 10 Vegan Options At Non-Vegan Restaurants

Many of us have experienced dining out at omnivore establishments. And aren’t we just lucky if there’s something like a plate of iceberg lettuce, a baby grape tomato and table salt and pepper? Come on! Who wants to eat that? Even some meat eaters we know wouldn’t accept it. Why should any vegan?

SALAD IS NOT A VEGAN OPTION!

We may have exaggerated just a little bit. We ARE The Food Duo, after all! We’ve been around the foodie block a few times, and know many omnivore restaurants will offer at least 1 or 2 vegan menu items, or are willing to whip up something. Here are just some of our favorites.

  1. Hummus. It’s become so popular that many non-Mediterranean restaurants offer different varieties of hummus these days

  2. Pasta. Make sure to ask your server is the pasta is vegan (many are) and what ingredients are in the sauces.

  3. Bruschetta Sure it’s a side dish, but a yummy one.

  4. Guacamole. Another side dish. Another yummy vegan option.

  5. Pizza. More pizzerias and Italian restaurants are offering vegan pizza. Places that don’t, will often agree to allow you to give the pizza maker your favorite vegan cheese (just ask in advance).

  6. Asian Restaurants. Whether it’s Chinese, Pan-Asian, Thai, Korean or Japanese, Asian omni restaurants offer the most vegan options of any cuisine!

  7. Sushi. Most sushi places offer various veggie rolls that are fresh and delicious.

  8. Frozen Non-dairy Yogurt or Sorbet. FroYo places, like 16 Handles, are as popular as traditional ice cream places are they are sprouting up all over the place. Many offer vegan options including great toppings!

  9. Veggie Burgers. Yep, we know, yawnnnnnn. For some establishments this is the only vegan option they offer. Just make sure to ask the server what ingredients are in the burger or what brand they use if it’s not made in-house.

  10. Indians Food. Many Indian restaurants offer great vegan options. One that don’t are often willing to veganize many items on their menus.

  1. Happy Vegan MoFo!

Looking forward to your lists this month. I always do a little happy dance when I see hummus on an otherwise non-vegan menu. It’s one of my favourite options.

  2. This is going to be fun! And one of my fave vegan options at omni restaurants: french fries. Always a good go to (so long as they are not cooked in lard). And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ordered them to accompany my sad iceberg salad!
