Juicing vs. VitaMix

Momma Mac, who loves her veggie juices, has had a Jack Lalanne's Ultimate Steel Power juicer in her home that she never used. Today, she asked us to make her a juice, but she wanted to try it in the juicer rather than the Vita-Mix. Of course, she wanted us to keep the juicer in our home. Another contender in the Battle of Counter Space.

The juicer was pretty easy to assemble. The juicing process was quick and easy. Then, the clean-up was a bit of a pain, having to disassemble and clean each part...before I found out that the many of the components can be put in the dishwasher!

Now, the juice. I made a beet-apple-carrot blend with some celery, cucumber and parsley to boot. A mix I've made many times in my Vita-Mix. However, this time with the juicer, there seemed to be more flavor, where I could taste everything, rather than the end result of a mix. Not to say that the Vita-Mix would have done a bad job...it does a great job. It just that juicing without the pulp seems to bring out more in each fruit and vegetable used.

Compare-Contrast Time:

Vita-Mix:
Pros: One system that doesn't require disassembly or a major effort to clean; Whole fruit juicing is easy. Great when making smoothies, especially with fruits like bananas and mango. Works well with smaller berries, like blueberries. The blade is super-powerful and doesn't require much effort to push fruits and veggies towards the blade. Doesn't take up much room on the counter.

Cons: If you don't like pulp, then it's not the way to go. May require adding water to get to a juice-like texture. Warms up if running too long.

Juicer:
Pros: Easy to put together. Juicing is pretty easy. Juices seem to have more flavor and you can taste each ingredient. Depending on your model, you can clean components in the dishwater.

Cons: Cleaning, if you don't have a dishwasher. Having to disassemble each time to clean. The leftover pulp. A bit cumbersome and clunky. Can take up a good amount of room on the counter.

I can't say I would pick one over the other for overall use. I think it comes down to the type of juice you're looking to make. If you want a smoothie, a fibrous, pulpy juice or one  with mango or banana, then go with the Vita-Mix. If you're going with a straight up juice made from larger or more solid ingredients, then go with a juicer.

Having tried both today, I'll probably switch off or use both.

This evening, I tried something a little different. A Mango Salsa Juice with the following:

  • 1 Mango
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1/4 Cucumber
  • 1/2 Large Bell Pepper
  • Handful of Cilantro
  • 2-3 Clove of Garlic
  • Dash of Cayenne and Tabasco

14 Days Down for the Count!

If you've been following us on Facebook or Twitter, you may have seen some of our fruit & veggie juice blends. We had a couple of slips eating a sandwich, fries and Tings. However, it's all been good. We've noticed a couple of changes:

Weight loss: Artie down 12lbs. Mac down 9lb.
Mood: Not as depressed, have more energy
Blood sugar for Mac: Now in the "normal" range
Workouts: Bumped up over 30 minutes. Artie: 35. Mac: 45-60

Yesterday, we did something crazy (for us). We did a double workout. Artie did recumbent bike at the gym, while I worked on bike and treadmill. Then in the evening, we did a power walk for about 2 miles. And boy were my feet SORE, but I'd do it again...just not for a while.

We'll try to get another update out to you guys in the next week! By the end, we'll do some side-by-side  photo comparisons so you can see our progress. I will say that I'm a little nervous about what to do at the end of the juice fast, but we'll see how it goes.

Juicing at Jolo's Kitchen

Mac and I simply love Jolo’s Kitchen, if you recall our first post about them. We go there often! We’ve been savoring their unique vegan Caribbean fare since the joint opened in 2008. Despite having eaten many of dishes on their menu, for some inexpiable reason, we’ve never tried any of the fresh juices they offer from their menu.

Since we started juicing fast last week, we made a concerted effort to order some juices, smoothies and protein blends. Recently, Mac ordered zingy and refreshing carrot, beet and ginger root combo.  I sucked down a delicious blend that contained peanut butter, oats, blueberries, protein powder , and a drop of agave. It tasted just like a PB&J sandwich!

It’s not just the flavor of the drinks I enjoy; I truly am impressed with those powerful machines they have to make fresh juices! The aroma that permeates the place as they whip up those wonderfully fresh tonics will overtake your olfactory senses! The other day, I overheard a customer say “Mmmm, that smells good”, as Tania whipped up our yummy libations.

When it comes to juicing at Jolo's Kitchen, the combinations are endless that you can try. The staff is also always willing to make a recommendation or answer any questions you may have.

A Cool Site about Juicing

Someone was kind enough to share with me and others the link to a cool site called MyPhytos.com. It's a juicing site with user-submitted recipes for juice blends. You can even create your own. What I liked most is that you can see the nutritional facts for your recipe as your build it. There are also some good resources shared if you have an interest in juicing, whether it's to detox your body, lose weight or just be healthy.

Here's a quick update on how we're doing:

Mac (me): Day 7 of juicing. Not getting enough sleep due to just living life. Sleep is critical. So I need to work on that. Other than that, it's been going well.

Artie: Modified things. Had a rough go with going strictly liquid. So he has mixed it up by including some solids (salads) into his diet. He did have some stomach and leg cramping and felt dehydrated. Has to work on his water intake, because he admitted he's not drinking enough. He's also been getting headaches. He's going to try full juicing on Monday.

Artie's going to share more of his experience a little later. Until then, CHEERS TO JUICE!

Juice the Juice!

We've completed Day 4 of our juice fast. We're shooting for 60 days of this, kiddos! All to reboot our systems!

Here's the update for today:

Macaroon: Tired in the morning, but had a boost of energy in the late afternoon. Went to the gym and hit the elliptical for 35 minutes. Then, filled out some paperwork for school (moving from grad certificate to Master's program) with an essay!

Artichoke: Had a rough go, but got through it on 1 coffee, 1 iced tea and a diet soda. Vowed to have no more iced tea or soda the rest of the way. Coffee is a difficult out to cut out completely. Needs to increase water intake and do more exercising. Also, decided to modify fast to include one salad a day. It's tough not to be able to chew food.

Short and sweet.

Today's fave juice blend: pineapple, cantaloupe, lime juice, carrots, celery, spinach and kale

(Sorry, no photos...again...I got to snap the juices as I make them to share with you)

Juicin' Day 3

So, today was our third day of juicing. So far, so...okay? Headaches for me. Tummy cramps for Artie. However, we're getting through it, despite cravings for a Streamliner burger and Tings (vegan Cheez Doodles for those who don't know).

To top of the day of sipping on liquified fruits and veggies, Artie went to Natural Way Cafe in Fair Lawn, NJ and picked a couple of "shots" of "Kiwi Twister" and "Fruits & Veggie Blend." Yum Yum Yum! We enjoyed them while taking a detour through Rockland County, NY and the Tappan Zee Bridge to get back to NYC and The Bronx. It definitely made the drive home better.

By the way, I highly recommend Natural Way Cafe if you're ever in Bergen County, NJ. It's a small shop with great holistic and green products, fresh juices and delicious vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free snacks and meals.

Kiwi Twister: Kiwi, Apple, Banana, Superfood

Fruits & Veggie Blend: Kale, Carrot, Celery, Strawberries, Orange Juice

Juice Boot Shuffle!

It's been a while, we know. We've missed writing on here, because life has been so busy and really become an obstacle in what we love. In fact, it led us to eating crap...though plant-based...but still crap. So to our dear non-veggie friends, yes, you can still eat a crap diet without meat!

Over the past few weeks and months, I've been dealing with some health issues. It's totally based on how I've been eating. Carb overload, junk food mania, blood running with French fries and chocolate. Plus, my nearly 30-lb weight loss last year was totally eradicated and I literally went back to the exact weight where I started.

The 2 worse parts of this are the retinal vein occlusion that developed in my eye (basically a blood clot) and how I have to get monthly shots. Plus, my blood sugar has been really out of control, dipping and diving. And a side effect seems have to developed with skin breakouts! Not fun.

Artie's also been dealing with weight gain and some bouts of excessive exhaustion.

So, I...well WE...finally decided to get things back on track. In deciding how to do that, we came across a common thread, even looking back on what friends and family did over the years. Juicing...

Momma Mac is a juicer. I even shared her recipe for her favorite juice a while ago here. It's helped her a lot.

A few of our friends did juicing for weight loss. They found out that not only did they lose weight, they had more energy, health ailments reduced, medications were not needed as much, etc.

On top of that, 5+ years ago, the banquet manager for our wedding told us about the benefits he saw in juicing.

We've seen documentaries like Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and read multiple articles over the years. We even tested the waters ourselves and liked it...until our Vita-Mix container broke. Now looking back, why didn't we stick with it?!?! Why weren't we more proactive! I guess we can't really look at WHY anymore.

So, we're here today. Embarking on a juice fast. We'll see how long we go with it. We'll find out how we'll do. I need to reset my body. Then re-learn how to eat. No more fad/crash diets. I just want to be friggin healthy and if I lose weight, then great. But I need to concentrate on myself...get rid of stress...be more positive...and live life to the fullest.

I sign off from this post with some homemade "Greenberry" juice. Raise of a glass. CHEERS
